Dimensions of Learning Hub - Mackay, Gold Coast and Melbourne

The Australian National Schools Network would like to invite all interested teachers (P-12) to participate in the Dimensions of Learning (DoL) Introductory hubs which have kick started in various locations nationally.  The following locations are now open for registrations Pioneer SHS (Mackay)  and Trinity College (Gold Coast) and Williamstown (Melbourne).

Participants in the hub will focus on a pedagogical journey that explores a comprehensive learning framework - a “thinking” approach to learning. DoL uses what researchers and theorists know about how students learn to improve learning outcomes as well as providing an effective tool to align assessment, pedagogy and curriculum planning.  The learning journey focuses on participants constructing their own knowledge and understanding through hands on and practical examples, which are learnt through a 5 day action learning that is spread over a 3- 5 month period.

What is Dimensions of Learning?

The Dimensions of Learning (DoL) is a complete learning framework that incorporates a common language to align assessment, pedagogy and planning through a "thinking" approach. It allows teachers to make strategic pedagogical choices through evidence based practice.

DoL originated through a detailed meta-analysis conducted by the Denver, US based McREL group, then led by Dr Robert Marzano.    The focus of the research was to develop a learning design framework based on how learners learn.  The framework  incorporates the most current research and educational theories on learning to focus teacher practice to achieving intended outcomes.

DoL contextualizes successful learning in terms of five types of thinking dispositions and aims at getting educators to become strategic instructors of learning.

Dimensions of Learning: Five Types of Thinking:

  • Dimension 1: Attitudes and Perceptions about Learning
  • Dimension 2: Acquisition and Integration of Knowledge
  • Dimension 3: Extension and Refinement of Knowledge
  • Dimension 4: Meaningful Use of Knowledge
  • Dimension 5: Productive Habits of the Mind

How can DoL Help schools?

In the busy working environment of schools, teachers need to be selective and strategic in their pedagogical choices to maximise learning. The ANSN professional learning opportunities allow participants to develop a deep understanding of how students learn as well as how to develop an environment that fosters successful thinking dispositions.

Current research findings indicate that using DoL as a common language for learning design can shift the learning paradigm: at individual school sites; and at an education district level.  The Australian National Schools Network (ANSN) is currently offering a number of professional learning opportunities to construct meaning through this framework within your personal teaching or school context.

The Dimensions of Learning Hubs provide opportunities for participants to address the National Professional Standards for Teachers (Ministerial Council of Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs, 2003).  In particular the  the key elements of: Professional practice; Knowledge; Relationships and Values are central to this professional learning.

For Queensland teachers the ANSN hubs tailor learning to provide

opportunities for participants to develop skills and knowledge to help them address the 3 key facets of the Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers framework:

Professional Standards for Queensland Teachers framework:

  • teaching and learning
  •
    • design and implement intellectually challenging learning experiences
    • design and implement learning experiences that value learning
  •  professional relationships
  •
    • Contribute to professional teams
  • professional growth
  •
    • commit to professional practice and professional  renewal

Participating in DoL Hubs

The ANSN action learning approach facilitates participant’s learning through reflection and shared practice using the lens of the DoL framework.  All workshops aim at developing a culture of professional sharing and learning, through hands on practical activities.
